SARATOGA SPRINGS — Ellen (Kelly) Carol Baker of Saratoga Springs passed away Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Albany Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was 61.

Kelly was born June 20, 1946 in Oneida, KY, daughter of Dr. Arthur G. Baker and Theresa M. Baker of New Hartford, NY. She attended Macalester College and transferred to University of Michigan where she graduated in 1968. She lived first in New York City and worked as a copy editor at a small publishing company. She then moved to Albany, NY where she worked as a caseworker with the New York State Office of Children & Family Services before attending Albany Law School and graduating in 1976. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1977 and entered private practice in the law firm that became Pozefsky and Baker in Gloversville, NY. She was the second female County District Attorney in New York State history in 1979, returning to private practice after her term ended. Among community services, she was a child advocate in New York State Office of Children & Family Services, on the Big Brothers Big Sisters board and was the first counsel for the Promote Gloversville Development. Since 1992 she lived in Saratoga Springs and served on the boards of the Spring Hill Waldorf School and the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation. Kelly had a life-long interest in the outdoors, including hiking, XC-skiing and gardening. She was a member of the Yaddo Garden Association. She was a talented artist with interests in knitting, drawing and painting from nature. Kelly loved playing the piano and always played at family gatherings. Her love of travel began with a four-month trip throughout Europe in 1972. She was a brilliant and creative woman who continually sought to use her talents to help others. Kelly will be remembered for her generosity, kindness, sense of humor, and loving smile. Her love and devotion to her family was exceptional.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Hunt Sutherland; two children, Moyah Sutherland and Clark Sutherland both of Saratoga Springs; three sisters, Tannette Bakker of Kingston, PA, Margaret Bakker of Shavertown, PA, Florence Baker of Spruce Head, ME; two brothers, Paul Baker of Durham, NC and Stephen Baker of Olympia, WA and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs, 624 North Broadway followed by a reception. Donations may be made to the Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030 or the Northwest Earth Institute for Sustainability, 317 SW Alder, Suite 1050, Portland, OR 97204, in memory of Kelly.

Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373).

I remember Ellen as being kind, gentle and soft spoken with a great smile. Very sorry to hear of her passing.
