Paul E. Murin Jr.: 1946 - 2008

President of brokerage firm

August 26, 2008|By Patricia Trebe, SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE

In the time that Paul E. Murin Jr. held the reins as president of David A. Noyes & Co., the brokerage firm tripled in size and added offices locally and throughout the Midwest.

But his most lasting legacy was with those who worked closest to him, said John Bouckaert, executive vice president at the company.

"He had an open-door policy and he was available for any reason to any of his associates at the firm, from the secretary to the executive vice president," said Bouckaert, who worked with Mr. Murin for 30 years. "How do you say something to describe his style other than wonderful? He was someone of great character."

Mr. Murin, 62, of Hinsdale, died of a heart attack Saturday, Aug. 23, in Butterfield Country Club in Oak Brook.

Ten years after he joined David A. Noyes & Co., Mr. Murin and his business partner, L.H. Bayley, bought out the other partners at the firm in 1978. Mr. Murin became president and Bayley chairman of the board.

At the time there were 40 associates in the Chicago, Oak Park, Skokie, Elgin and Indianapolis offices. Today there are more than 150 associates at all their branches, which have expanded to include Oak Lawn, Grand Rapids, Mich., Massillon, Ohio, and Nashville, Ind.

"Paul had great people skills," Bayley said. "His clients sensed he was always very forthright. ... And Paul was not the type of leader that said, 'I am at the front. Follow me.' He bonded with his associates."

Born in Chicago, Mr. Murin was adopted by his parents when they were in their 40s, and he was raised an only child, said his wife, Suzanne. The family lived first in Evanston, then in Lake Forest, where Mr. Murin attended Lake Forest Academy for three years before graduating from Lake Forest High School in 1964.

He attended the University of Denver, where he met his future wife. He graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in business in June 1968.

That same year he joined David A. Noyes, where his father was a general partner.

"He just loved the business," his wife said. "It was the business his father was in, and he grew up with it."

Mr. Murin was a member of the Young Presidents' Organization, then graduated to the World Presidents' Organization. He also was a member of the Union League Club, the Chicago Board of Trade and, until two years ago, a member of the New York Stock Exchange, his wife said.

"He was very visible in Chicago among the brokerage community," said Robert Heidenrich, senior vice president at the Robert W. Baird brokerage firm in Chicago. "He was a very ethical, moral-type guy with this great sense of humor."

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Paul III, and a daughter, Amy.

Funeral services will begin at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday in Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home, 4343 Main St., Downers Grove, followed by a 10 a.m. mass in St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, 306 W. 4th St., Hinsdale.
